"This is unexpected... but I like their strategy!" a Krudger of the Ironheads tribe

The Ardovikian Plain a great vast sea of grass,it had always been an annoying obstacle, for the Ironheads tribe to cross. The petty human kingdoms always had countless lookout post, and patrols of scouts to warn their, puny armies of the Ironheads tribe’s raiding parties. Never had they been able to get too, the kingdoms of men heartland uncontested, to pillage burn and kill these soft humans. And The humans reliance on their black powder warmachines, always annoyed the orcs because it, never gave them a prober good fight! It had always been a struggle, and the rewards had never been great.

But now with Abyss spreading and the destruction that followed, the orc tribes sensed a change. Great hordes of orcs now crossed the Ardovikian plain, all at once and the Ironheads tribe sensed their chance for far greater rewards than ever. To finally reap a grim tally among the humans they so despised.

In their eagerness to get to the humans, the Ironheads tribe simply skipped the whole gathering off the orcs thing, and went straight for their prey. What met them there, at the edge of the Ardovikian plain surprised the Krudger leading the vanguard to a great extent.

It was an Ogre army, and what they did next surprised him even more…

They charged

The battle!

The Ironheads Tribe setup

Being a bit unexperienced against a pure Ogre army the orcs decided to adopt a tight formation with smaller units up front to absorb the charge, with chariots taking a flank and trolls the other.

(notice the 2 ogre regiments with the ogre army standard are Siegebreakers)

Vanguard moves Before turn 1 started the 2 units of Orc Skulks made a vanguard move to get a bit ahead of the main army and getting within reach of the only shooting unit from the ogres. (Being excellent bait for the Ogres was also part of the plan – off course the Krudger didn’t tell them that) (Ogres had already moved before we remembered to get a picture of vanguard move)

Turn 1 - Ogre

The Ogre army charged straight ahead with almost all the units in the army made at the double move to get within reach of the orcs. The mammoth on the left moving into an flanking position on the trolls.

The shooting phase was a bit uneventful, with the shooters trying to cause damage to the ax horde, but managed to miss all their shots.

End off Ogre turn 1

The aggressive movement of the Ogres made the orcs cautious. Nervous of the charge distance the Orc army moved forward only a little bit. The exception was the chariots which were seeking a much easier flank charge on the siege breakers for next turn.

The shooting of the orcs were much more successful than the Ogres with Skulks on the hill hitting the Ogre Shooter regiment 2 times and wounding them once. The second unit shot at the same target but managed an impressive 4 hits but sadly the ogre defense was tough and only a single wound was caused.
The shooting from the Orcs apparently unnerved the ogres and they got wavered with a fine dice roll of 11, the army standard bearer tried to inspire the ogre shooters but they would have none of his heroic talk and remained wavered on the reroll which was also 11.

Turn 2 Ogres
With a grin the Ogre warlord sounded a charge with most of the ogre army within reach of the orcs charging.

The mammoth and an ogre warrior horde with blade of slashing made a combined charge against the troll horde. The warrior regiment charged the Morax troop and the warlord himself charged the skulks on the ground. The Siege breakers regiments were far more cautious and presented a wall steel and ogre flesh so the chariots had no choice but a frontal charge.

With no shooting to speak off the ogres went straight for combat.
The mammoth managed 7 hits on the trolls but even with Thunderous charge 2 and crushing strength 2 only caused 4 wounds. The supporting ogre warrior horde got 14 hits on the trolls, though the blade of slashing was of no help. The slimy troll hide protected them from most of the damage and only 5 wounds were caused. This nerve check for the trolls resulted in a rout thanks to brutal and the inspiring presence of the flagger could not stop the trolls from routing. Both the mammoth and the horde advanced forward with the mammoth getting to eager and were denied a sight line to the Morax regiment next turn.

The ogre warrior regiment had trouble hitting the Morax troop and only got 4 hits which resulted in 2 wounds. The Morax got wavered from them anyway and the inspiring reroll ended with the same result.

The Ogre Warlord Varug laid waste to Orc skulks with 5 hits and 5 wounds with promptly routed the skulks even with inspiring from the Krudger.

the orcs left flank

Turn 2 Orcs
Seeing the state of his left flank the Krudger desperately called out an attack order to push back the ogre assault.

The tiny Orclings charged toward the left siege breaker regiment to hold them in place while a Morax troop moved into position. The chariots having thought about their options decided to charge the other siege breakers regiment (some orcs would argue it was the only option).
The Morax Regiment reformed so not to get flank charged by the ogre warrior horde.
The Ax horde saw the flank of the big warlord Varug and eagerly charged the ogre while the krudger charged his front.

The skulks on the hill shot at the ogre Shooters hoping to eliminate one problem. They managed an impressive 5 hits and 3 of them wounded the ogres. With Ogre Shooters courage already established as lacking it was no surprise they routed from the field.
In combat the Orclings horde with unheard of fury hit the siege breaker unit 12 times and 3 wounding hits but the siege breakers still held the line. The chariot got 6 hits in with 4 wounding but the Ogres were not buckling and held under the impact.

The Ax horde swarmed around the Warlord Varug and managed 27 hits with 16 of them wounding the warlord. The Orc Krudger hoping to cut off the head from the snake added another 3 hits with 2 wounding. The badly bleeding warlord was too stubborn to die and held the line against the brutality of the orcs with a nerve check roll of snake eyes. This surprised everyone and the Krudger who had hoped to salvage his left flank with this charge.

Turn 3 – Ogres
With Warlord Varug’s stand against the ax horde and Krudger, the ogre army confidently circles in for the kill.

Siege breakers countercharge the chariot with the army standard charging them too, where their brother unit countercharges the orclings. The ogre warrior regiment charges the once wavering Morax troop again. The blade of slashing ogre warrior horde charges the Morax regiment while the mammoth moves around into a better position. The other ogre warrior horde just reforms since they have nothing to do. The warlord Varug is furious with pain and charges the big ax horde hoping to do some damage.

Siege breakers vs the chariot hit 6 times but only got 4 wounds in with the army standard only doing a single hit and wound. The nerve of the chariots is fine and they hold. The other regiment siege breaker hit the orcling 7 times and gets 5 wounds which rout the tiny greenskins.
The warrior regiment hit the Morax troop an impressive 8 times and caused 7 wounds which routed the Morax troop in a hurry.
The warrior horde got 13 hits in on the Morax which 10 of them were wounding. The Morax regiment joined their brothers in arms in the rout and the inspiring from the flagger was not convincing them to stay.

The Warlord Varug being badly wounded only managed 2 hits on the ax horde which also resulted in 2 wounds. But Ax horde was so terrified of this mighty ogre warlord they wavered. The Inspiring and no doubt a few threats from the Krudger got them to hold instead.

fury of ogres - turn 3 ending

Turn 3 Orcs
With limited options left the Krudger goes in for a last desperate charge.
The chariots hoping to break though the siegebreakers counter charge them. The skulks rating their chances better in combat, goes in for a charge against the other siege breaker unit. The ax horde charges the warlord hoping to end him.
The Krudger charge the warrior regiment with the flagger hoping to inspire the orcs with his deeds.

The chariots does a good 8 hits on the siege breakers but sadly only 2 wounds with the siege breakers holding firm again. The skulks gets 3 fine hits and 2 wounds but the siege breakers also hold here.
The ax horde gets 10 hits on the warlord and 8 more wounds which finally kills the warlord. The ax horde overruns 6 forward and stopping before the warrior horde.

The Krudger perhaps realized he just charged and ogre warrior regiment only gets 3 hits and 1 wound with the flagger doing nothing. The ogre warrior regiment is not impressed and holds.

Turn 4 – Ogres

The Ogres aim to finish this battle now and avenge their Warlord
The ogre warriors regiment charge the orc krudger while the 2 warrior hordes charge the ax horde. Both siege breaker regiments counter charge their respective enemies, with the army standard helping against the chariots. The mammoth just wanders around in the orc deployment zone.

The siege breakers charging the skulks does 5 hits and 5 wounds which routs the brave archers. The siege breakers only hit the chariots a single time but it does wound with the army standard getting 2 hits and 1 wound on them too. This meek attempt is still enough to waver the chariots.
The warrior regiment gets 6 hits on the krudger with 3 wounding which initially routs the krudger but he inspires himself to just getting wavered.

The blade of slashing warrior horde hit the ax horde 13 times and gets 7 wounds while their brother’s only gets 11 hits and 5 wounds. This routs the ax horde and the inspiring, from the flagger is not enough to keep them around. The ogres reform to face the orc leadership.

Turn 4 – Orcs

With his army routed and his own courage faltering, the krudger knows the battle is lost
With very little to do from the orc army they commit a few desperate charges hoping to get a few more kills.

The flagger charges the warrior regiment again and does nothing
While the troop of Morax that have been hiding behind the chariots can now finally see something and charge the left siege breakers regiment. They do only 13 hits and 3 wounds on the siege breakers. This initially routs the unit. But the ogre’s army standard inspires his men to fight on and they hold instead.

With this final attempt the orc Krudger concede the battle and retreats.

    Thank you!
I wanted to try a lot of Morax troops since I knew I was fighting ogres and hoped the attacks would help deal with them!

I made some obvious deployment mistakes here but I aim to improve

  • Marwin says:

At first glance, everything is correct, I noticed no mistakes. The armies here are composed quite differently – especially for orcs. Good!
