Edge of the Abyss

Herneas stalked the mountain pass of Rhyn Dufaris skewerer at the ready as he had done for decades. His loyal band of rangers fanning out behind him and into the valley floor, eyes eagerly surveying the rocks and scrub for any sign of the expected incursion from their tainted brethren.
Since the Abyss had burst into flames widening that vile scar upon the land there had been probing attacks from these fallen Abyssal Dwarves into the valleys. Each time the attacks got stronger and more valuable lives were lost. A decision was made by the high council that these incursions cannot be tolerated any longer.
Herneas snapped back on target at the sound of scree falling. The sound was so subtle that none of the other rangers even noticed. At first it was just a couple of grains then a handful all sliding inexorably down the slope to the valley below. It was at that point that Herneas realised with a sickening dread that the ground was cracking as well and pushing upwards, slowly at first and then more quickly. Herneas just had time to raise Skewerer and open his mouth to give a warning when the ground burst asunder and a huge hand made of solid stone reached out and grabbed the nearest ranger, pushing him down into the ground and into a bloody pulp. he didnt even cry out the attack was so sudden. Pushing itself up from the ground the lesser obsidian Golem began to flay around taking down several other rangers before Herneas's Skewerer bolt took it under the chin erupting from the back of its skull with a shower of rock shards. It sunk heavily to the ground crushing a final ranger beneath its bulk.
As the dust settled and silence descended Herneas assessed the situation. surprised by a Golem, the shame of it, he hung his head down feeling every one of his many years, heavier than he had ever before. Maybe it was the reawakened Abyss wearing down upon him. He shook himself from his reverie and looked down the valley to see the Abyssal Dwarf army marching into view.
Well at least he had the high ground.......
