Death In The Dark Woods

"Count, they would call him count soon enough. A short trip into the wilderness to crush the upstart druid, Oak-thorn. For too long had Karath the Bold watched his forces shambling back, beaten by little more than animated shrubbery. Now it was time to strike at the root, the Druid must fall if the forest was to belong to the tide of Undeath. Karath imagined the silent beauty of the forest gone dead; silent but for the wind in the trees."

The scenario was kill, played with armies of a thousand points a side. The forces of nature rolled forward with three hordes of heavy hitters. Two Shamblers, one Earth Elementals. Vanguard moves placed them in terrain at the outset. Oak-thorn, mounted on a stag, advanced, surging his forces onward. A beast of nature, some sort of Griffon, kept to a flank and a Forest Warden strode along the other flank prepared to sound his mighty horn (Diadem of Dragonkind) in the face of the enemy.

Seeing that there was no way forward but through, the Undead forces surged forward into the enemy. Ghouls scampered ahead in the vain hope of some tasty flesh for their troubles. Ah, it was not to be...woe to thee o Karath. In defiance of reason and statistics (Snake Eyes on nerve at 25 wounds, twice). The forest Shamblers held firm in the face of a double charge by a horde of Wights and Zombies. One troop of Ghouls was vaporized by a blast from the Forest Warden. The other troop slowed down the Earth Elementals and made their feet sticky. The Werewolves did a lot of damage to the Shamblers in front of them but succumbed to them and the Beast of Nature gnawing their flanks. Enraged, still slightly smoldering from the breath attack from the Diadem of Dragonkind, the Vampire Lord lay into the forest Warden. All for nought. The Shamblers and Elementals destroyed the Zombie Horde and continued on to the Vampire. Things got real. Turns out Karath forgot that "angry shrubs" are like huge volumes of sharp stakes heading out with murderous intent. We will never know which of them caused the blow which sent Karath to his final rest.

"There is a stillness again in the woods protected by the druid Oak-thorn but, it is not the silence Karath intended."
